Our guide on how Reiki can help you during pregnancy

reiki

Reiki is Japanese for ‘universal life energy' - a natural system that helps bring about an improved sense of wellbeing and a positive feeling of spiritual renewal.

What can it help?

Reiki treatment is thought to help mums-to-be relax, while also easing back pain and relieving nausea and insomnia. Fans of Reiki believe regular treatment can also lead to a smoother labour and delivery.

What happens?

As with most treatments, the practitioner first chats to you about your history and any health problems you’re having. Then they place their hands lightly in positions over your body starting at the head and working down the body.

Don’t worry - you’re dressed the whole time. And there’s no massage or manipulation - some practitioners simply hold their hands above your body. Some people say Reiki makes them feel so gorgeously relaxed they drift off to sleep.

Is it safe?

Yes, it is safe but it’s important you choose a qualified practitioner who is properly trained, qualified and insured. And they need to be skilled at treating mums-to-be. The best way to know for sure, is checking whether a Reiki practitioner is on the Complementary & Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC) register.

How much does it cost?

The cost of a Reiki session may vary but is likely to be about £20- £25 per hour.
