Making hospital stays a little easier
Everything you (and baby) need.
As your due date draws closer, it’s time to get one big thing ticked off your list: packing your hospital bag. Whether you’re nesting like a champ or clinging to that “I’ve still got time” energy, having your bag ready from around 36 weeks is a great way to feel calm, prepared, and in control.
To make life easier, here’s the full lowdown on what to pack – for you and your new arrival.
What to pack for you
Labour and those first few hours (or days) post-birth can be unpredictable, so comfort is key. Here’s what you’ll want in your hospital bag:
-
Your birth plan and hospital notes – These are essential, so keep them at the top of your bag.
-
Loose, comfy clothes – Think oversized T-shirts, stretchy bottoms or anything breathable you feel good in.
-
Dressing gown and slippers or flip-flops – Ideal for shuffling to the loo or shower in style.
-
Nightwear – A couple of front-opening or loose-fitting options are perfect, especially if you’re breastfeeding.
-
Three changes of comfy clothes – You’ll thank yourself for having fresh outfits.
-
Socks – Hospitals can be chilly!
-
5 or 6 pairs of knickers – Disposable ones can be handy, too.
-
2 or 3 soft bras – Include nursing bras if you’re breastfeeding.
-
Breast pads – Even if you’re not planning to breastfeed, these are helpful.
-
2 packs of maternity or super-absorbent sanitary pads – Post-birth bleeding is real.
-
Your wash bag – Pack all your essentials like:
- Toothpaste and toothbrush
-
Hairbrush and hairbands
-
Flannel, soap, and body lotion
-
Lip balm (dry lips are common in labour)
-
Deodorant and hand sanitiser
- Towels – One for you, one for your hair if you fancy a shower.
-
Eye mask – Wards can be bright even when you’re trying to nap.
-
Your own pillow – For a touch of home comfort.
-
Snacks and drinks – Labour can be long, so bring your favourites and a reusable water bottle (bonus if it has a straw).
-
A fan or water spray – For mid-labour cooling off.
-
Any medication you’re taking regularly.
-
TENS machine – If you’ve decided to use one, don’t forget the batteries!
-
Entertainment – Books, music, podcasts, magazines… whatever helps you relax and pass the time.
-
Phone and charger – A power bank or long cable is extra useful.
-
Glasses or contact lenses – Plus spares if you can.
-
A spare bag – For laundry or anything that doesn’t make it home clean.
What to pack for your baby
Babies don’t pack light either! Here’s what you’ll need:
- Bodysuits, vests and sleepsuits – Pack a few in newborn and 0-3 month sizes.
-
Going-home outfit – Something soft and photo-worthy!
-
Hat, scratch mittens, socks or booties – Keep that tiny human cosy and safe.
-
Snowsuit – If you’re heading home in colder weather.
-
Nappies – At least 10–12 for a day’s stay.
-
Cotton wool or baby wipes – For those first clean-ups.
-
Muslin cloths – Perfect for spills, burps and swaddling.
-
Baby blanket or shawl – Great for snuggles and the journey home.
-
Car seat – Hospitals won’t let you leave without one. Practice fitting it ahead of time!
