Top 100 girls' names chosen in the UK this year

The UK’s favourite top 2 names given to girls in the last year remains unchanged as Olivia, Amelia and keep hold of their positions. Yet Isla crept ahead of Ava to become the UK’s third most popular girl’s name and we welcomed brand-new Top 10 entries from Freya and Ivy. 

Emily and Evie dropped out of the Top 10 and Ella and Sophie also slipped further down and out of the Top 20 (to places 17 and 21). 

Highest climbing girls’ names this year

The classically charming name, Arabella looks set to soar in popularity over the next year and scooped this year’s ultimate Top 100 climber - up a staggering 45 places to position 42. Closely followed by the more modern moniker, Myla which made an entrance at 79 having moved up 39 places.  

Contrastingly, the once considered old-fashioned name, Iris climbed an impressive 36 places to 80 and was joined by Mabel which made a debut in the Top 100 at 82 - rising a massive 85 places in 2020 – but they’ve still a long way to go if they’re to catch up with trendy ‘old-lady’ names Ivy, Elsie and Florence who boast positions 10, 17 and 19 respectively.  

Baby girls’ names on the decline 

The once trendy name Lexi which shot up the charts following the birth of Amanda Holden’s oldest daughter in 2006 is beginning to lose favour - down 26 places and just holding on in the Top 100 at position 91. Other once considered modern monikers; Brooke, Maddison and Paige have also dropped out of the Top 100 this year. 

Traditional names like Holly, Lucy, Chloe and Jessica also fell 20-30 places - leaving only Jessica in the Top 40 list at position 38.

Ironically, in 2020 the nation lost faith in choosing Faith as a name for baby girls. This year the name left the Top 100 to reside at position 125 along with Neveah and Leah (now placed at 111 and 122). 

Although, the names that fell from favour the most are Megan and Katie which both phenomenally plummeted over 100 places to positions 190 and 198 respectively.
